Most people dont even hear it.. I take quite a few cars out on testdrives with their owners that just got an ECU upgrade and boost jets installed - there have been occasions where the engine detonated (typically from overboosting) and I immediately point it out to them.. These times more than not they say "what noise" and even when I intentionally make it ping to show them, I frequently get a "uh, yeah... uhm, uhhhh, yeah I heard it.." I've also seen cars come in that I take out for testdrives and when I boost it I hear the clack of detonation and of course I let out of the gas only to find that the BC is maxed to the hilt. A few of those cars had obvious ring land damage and were coughing up a little smoke and loping notably at idle. Unfortunately most people dont seem to take the time to learn the possible drawbacks to performance upgrading and what the signs are that lead to failures.. *shrug* I'm sure you guys see your fair share of the same stuff too.. I have to hold myself back not to lecture customers that aren't taking care of their cars - its pretty frustrating to see..
